Mad as Hell

“When you are angry, don’t let that anger make you sin, and don’t stay angry all day. Don’t give the devil a way to defeat you.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭4‬:‭26‬-‭27‬ ‭ERV‬

I had to confess to God that I have been angry. I mean the kind of anger that settles in your bones and makes your heart ungrateful. I have allowed the things of this world to affect me to the point that I got mad. I know how good God has been to me, and I know that anger is not healthy. It affects your heart, your mind, your soul, and your body. I know that anger is destructive, and still, despite my best efforts, I found myself angry.

I wish I could pinpoint what happened, but it’s not one thing. It has been a continual list of things—starting with the election cycle, then minor health concerns, then finding out people whom I love secretly hate or resent me, and then work, with all the changes happening at once. But I finally had to admit:

I’m mad as hell!

“Come to me, all of you who are tired from the heavy burden you have been forced to carry. I will give you rest.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭11‬:‭28‬ ‭ERV‬

Now that I’ve gotten that off my chest, I will tell you—I have repented. I poured my heart out to God. It felt amazing to go to Him and just rest in His presence. When He tells you He will give you rest, that is exactly what He means. Don’t let me pretend He is a genie in a bottle who will snap His fingers and give you miraculous relief. But He will let you know He heard your cry. He will start to allow your mind to rest so you can concentrate on Him and those things that bring you peace.

So, I’ll give you this short scripture prayer so when you feel overwhelmed, angry, or just plain mad, you can use His words to comfort yourself:

Dear Father,
I will not worry about anything but pray and ask You for everything I need, always giving thanks for what I have.
And because I belong to Christ Jesus, God’s peace will stand guard over all my thoughts and feelings. His peace can do this far better than our human minds.
You said, “I have told you these things so that you can have peace in me. In this world, you will have troubles. But be brave! I have defeated the world.”
Lord, I thank You for answering my prayer. I thank You for saving me.
Now, our God, we thank You, and we praise Your glorious name!

By the blood of the Lamb, Amen.

All of those are scriptures; I took a few liberties, but I think you get the picture. Now that I’ve repented and given my thoughts and feelings to God, I have to get back to the business of lifting up my brothers and sisters in Christ.

“When you talk, don’t say anything bad. But say the good things that people need—whatever will help them grow stronger. Then what you say will be a blessing to those who hear you. And don’t make the Holy Spirit sad. God gave you His Spirit as proof that you belong to Him and that He will keep you safe until the day He makes you free.”
