When U Pray

Today I’m thanking God for my child.

I remember being an unwed teenage mom, catching all the smoke from the elders. I got the “Premarital sex is a sin” talk. I was told I would never amount to anything — just like my mom. I was told that having a child at 17 would ruin my life.

Well… they were right and wrong. But at the end of the day, we did alright. Her dad and I stuck together to give her a life, and we haven’t stopped. Yes, we’re still together because when it got hard, we listened to God.

Today, my 43‑year‑old child walked across the stage with her second degree — Summa Cum Laude — from the Big M, the University of Michigan, with her Bachelor’s in Social Work.

As I thanked God, He reminded me that raising her in His presence kept her when nothing seemed to be going right. She was nervous stepping into her new dream, but God kept her. I’m telling her business a little, but every year something new came up about tuition. We prayed together and trusted God together, and I can tell you this: she graduated with not one dollar of debt for this degree. Every year He made a way. Every dollar and every need was met.

We stood on this scripture as we prayed — together and separately. She may have had others praying, but I believe in the power of prayer. We stood on His Word that nothing is too hard for God, along with many other scriptures too numerous to name.

I said all this to say: if you are being led to change careers or choose a career, grab a prayer partner and the Word of God. Don’t let your fears be bigger than your faith. All things are possible if you believe.
